SlimFast Keto Review – 13 Things You Need to Know
Slimfast Keto: another well-known company on the keto train? For over forty years, SlimFast has produced weight loss products like nutritional bars and meal replacement shakes.
SlimFast Keto provides a plan to support dieters who wish to try a ketogenic diet. Along with a sensible diet and regular exercise, the program claims that dieters can see results in one week.
Our research team wanted to look into the SlimFast Keto products to determine their overall effectiveness as part of the ketogenic diet, including ingredients and clinical research. The research team found lots of information, including some things you’d never guess about the keto diet.
What is SlimFast Keto?
The SlimFast Keto line provides products for consumers on a high-fat, low-sugar, low-carbohydrate ketogenic diet. The keto diet is designed to keep users in a fat-burning state called ketosis.
SlimFast Keto products include keto smoothies and bars and keto-compatible supplements. SlimFast claims that following their low-carbohydrate diet plan will provide some of the following benefits:
- Rapid fat burning
- Hunger suppression
- Ability to eat foods like bacon and steak

How Did SlimFast Keto Start?
SlimFast has been in business since 1977; focusing on SlimFast diet pills, shakes, snacks, prepackaged meals, and other products for managed weight loss. SlimFast also provides meal plans to help consumers attain their health goals.
Beginning in 2004 in response to demand for low-carb products, SlimFast first produced the lower-sugar SlimFast Optima line and recently introduced SlimFast Keto products for the needs of a ketogenic diet.
SlimFast Keto Claims
SlimFast Keto products claim to help keep dieters in ketosis. While the official site acknowledges that there is no “magical, quick-fix cure for weight loss,” a low-carbohydrate keto diet such as the SlimFast diet plan can play a significant role in weight loss.
According to a study by the Experimental and Clinical Cardiology, on a ketogenic diet, the weight and body mass of obese patients “decreased significantly.”
The SlimFast Keto Diet also claims a ketogenic diet will help reduce hunger pangs by suppressing hunger hormones while also allowing dieters to eat satisfying foods like steak.
SlimFast Keto Ingredients
SlimFast Keto products include meal replacement shakes, snacks, and dietary supplements. All of the products provide low-carbohydrate, high-fat nutrition.
Some key SlimFast Keto ingredients include:
- MCT Oil Blend (palm, coconut, grass-fed butter)
- Protein Blend (whey protein concentrate, whey protein isolate)
- Grass-Fed Collagen Peptides
MCT Oil is an oil made of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) that commonly occurs in coconut oil. Medical News Today acknowledges that MCT oils such as coconut oil help reduce obesity in mice. MCT oils help raise the fat content of SlimFast Keto products and help promote a feeling of fullness.
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol. Erythritol is a modified form of sugar that does not raise your blood sugar level, according to the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
SlimFast Keto products frequently feature a natural sweetener called Stevia. Although stevia is 300 times sweeter than standard sugar, it has a limited caloric impact and has been used in foods in Japan since the 1970s.
Whey Protein and Collagen Protein
As shown in Obesity Research and , MCT oils allow the body to generate more energy, which gives dieters more room to eat satisfying proteins. Whey and collagen protein enable cells to rebuild themselves, which is especially important in conjunction with a healthy exercise program, as the SlimFast diet plan recommends.
Does SlimFast Keto Work?
Any diet or exercise plan has variable results depending on a person’s health and general commitment to the plan. However, as the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health points out, the ketogenic diet does tend to be effective for some different possible reasons:
- Control of appetite hormones
- Appetite suppressant effect of ketones
The SlimFast Keto diet, designed to maintain ketosis, has the potential to help dieters achieve these results.
SlimFast Keto Benefits and Results
SlimFast Keto results will vary. The products are designed to get dieters in a state of ketosis. In ketosis, the body uses fat to produce ketones, which are small molecules used for energy.
In short, an important benefit of the SlimFast Keto diet plan is that your body will burn its own stored fat to power you. The results of a long-term ketogenic diet have not been studied extensively.
Details on SlimFast Keto and Weight Loss
An important aspect to understand about this keto diet plan is that dieters replace two daily meals with SlimFast products including shakes, bars, or cookies to reduce hunger and maintain metabolic rate at a higher level.
For optimal weight loss, the SlimFast diet strongly advises dieters to avoid sweetened beverages and sweets in general. SlimFast Keto results depend on keeping sugar and carbs to a minimum.
Weight loss is more likely to occur when dieters keep themselves in a ketogenic state. Sugars or excessive carbohydrates will make the body “switch over” from burning fat to burning the carbs in food. This will cause weight loss to slow down, or more likely, reverse, so you gain weight.
How to Use SlimFast Keto
SlimFast Keto products can be used individually on an as-needed basis by dieters wanting an occasional low-carbohydrate snack or meal replacement shake. Additionally, SlimFast products can form an important part of an overall health program.
One to two meals a day can be replaced by SlimFast shakes, bars, or snacks. The final meal of the day can follow recipes or suggestions on the SlimFast keto diet program. Ideally, the meal should be higher in healthy fats, adequate in protein, and low in carbohydrates.
How Much Does Slimfast Keto Cost?
The official SlimFast website does not list prices for its items. Is SlimFast Keto on Amazon? Yes, and the products are easy to find. Some representative costs of specific SlimFast Keto products are as follows:
- Keto Meal Replacement Peanut Butter Fat Bomb: $9.93 per box
- Keto Meal Replacement Bar: $9.97 per box
- Keto Meal Replacement Powder Fudge Brownie Batter: $14.23 per canister
- Keto Creamer: $10.79
- MCT Oil: $15.97
- Ketone Test Strips: $9.97
Potential SlimFast Keto Side Effects
Potential SlimFast keto side effects can vary. Medical News Today points out that especially if dieters are new to ketosis, they may experience sluggishness, constipation, or low blood sugar.
Other keto dieters experience what is known as “keto flu,” a general feeling of lowered energy as your body adjusts from burning carbs to burning fat. Keto flu can be helped by drinking water with electrolytes.
SlimFast Keto Pros and Cons
SlimFast Keto products, if used as part of an overall health management program and regular exercise, may help dieters lose weight. Weight loss in a low-carbohydrate plan usually happens quickly before some degree of plateauing or tapering.
One downside to the SlimFast program may be the limited number of products available through the SlimFast Keto line. As Harvard University states, a low-carbohydrate diet can be challenging to stick to over the long run. Lack of food variety may cause dieters to lose interest.
What Users Are Saying
“I can stomach a lot of the meal replacement bars out there but this one is just awful. The size and look of the bar is appealing but the actual taste is disgusting and leaves a horrible taste in your mouth. The texture is even weird. Not sure those are actual chocolate chips or what? This is such a miss compared to the shake – which I love.”
“Great tasting shake that is making the keto transition much easier. Blends nicely and isn’t chalky or gritty like other shakes I have tried.”
“Taste is tolerable… has the typical stevia aftertaste. Since it contains MCT oil, I do not recommend this unless you have ready access to a toilet for a few hours after consumption. On the other hand, maybe it’s a good remedy for “keto constipation”.”
Bottom Line on SlimFast Keto
The SlimFast Keto line claims that dieters can lose weight with a minimal amount of hunger pangs or cravings by using SlimFast Keto products as part of an overall weight management plan in combination with exercise.
We’re all for moving toward a healthier life, but sometimes, it can be hard to make those lifestyle changes needed. Luckily, clinically-proven programs exist to make the transition a whole lot easier.
Is SlimFast Keto? Diet Facts and Review
Keto weight-loss diets are showing up everywhere these days. A recent example is the new SlimFast keto diet, which involves drinking low-carb meal replacement shakes (along with a few snacks) to dramatically cut your calorie intake.
A new line of SlimFast keto drinks, candies, and bars claims to support a healthy keto diet… but a glance at the ingredients list on these products tells a different story.
The SlimFast version of the keto diet is easy to understand and saves on meal prep time, which is great — but there are a few reasons to be cautious about SlimFast’s new keto products.
Keep reading to learn about SlimFast dieting, and why SlimFast’s new keto products and meal plan may not be the right move for a healthy keto diet.
What Is the SlimFast Keto Diet?
The rules of the SlimFast plan are simple. Each day you have two SlimFast meal replacement shakes from a shake mix, three 100-calorie snacks, and one 500 calorie meal. The 500 calorie meal is optional.
Each meal replacement smoothie contains about 180 calories. Add that to the snacks and the small meal and you’re at 1200-1300 calories per day. For men, the plan recommends adding another couple of optional snacks, for up to 1600 calories a day.
What’s in SlimFast Keto Products?
The meal replacement shakes contain fat, protein, and carbohydrates (macronutrient ratios depend on the flavor of shake). Some SlimFast products (the SlimFast Advanced Nutrition line) are advertised as low-carb, with 1-2 grams carbohydrate per shake, while others have over 20 grams per serving.
The shakes are fortified with vitamins and minerals like vitamin D, calcium, and magnesium. Other ingredients, like trans fats, are less desirable. More on this later.
The shakes come in flavors like milk chocolate and vanilla cream. Other SlimFast keto products include bars and snacks in flavors like double chocolate, triple chocolate, vanilla cake batter, peanut butter chocolate, and more.
You can find SlimFast keto shakes and bars at major retailers like Walmart and Amazon.
Will The SlimFast Keto Plan Help You Lose Weight?
If you can stick to the SlimFast keto diet plan long-term, you may lose weight. Going on the SlimFast diet means restricting calories, sometimes to under 1000 calories per day for women and under 1200 calories a day for men. It’s also likely that you’ll get into a ketogenic state.
Calorie restriction does work for weight loss— if you eat less, you’ll lose weight — and there have been a few studies specifically on SlimFast dieting that had promising results.
- One group of researchers found that putting obese people on the SlimFast diet led to a 7% reduction in body weight after 6 months
- Another study found that the SlimFast diet, along with three other weight loss programs, promoted significant weight loss
Clearly, SlimFast works in theory. The problem is whether or not you’ll actually adhere to a plan that restricts calories so intensely and replaces real, delicious food with mediocre shakes. Most people who follow a meal plan with such a large calorie deficit lose weight at first, but eventually, they gain the weight back, and in the long-term, they don’t see any real change in health or weight.
Take the Women’s Health Initiative Dietary Modification Trial, in which a group of researchers followed 48,835 women over 7.5 years. One group ate a low-fat calorie-restricted diet, while the other ate a normal diet
In the end, the weight difference between groups was minimal. Only about two pounds.
Another example is The Biggest Loser, a show that puts contestants on calorie-restricted diets. As fasting expert Dr. Jason Fung reports:
“Six years after their almost miraculous weight loss, thirteen of the fourteen contestants studied had regained the weight they’d lost. This is a failure rate of 93 percent”
The point is: The SlimFast diet may cause short-term weight loss, but it’s probably not sustainable. There are better ways to lose weight long-term.
Problems With The SlimFast Keto Diet
There is one major advantage to SlimFast’s keto diet: convenience.
It’s easy to throw a SlimFast meal replacement bar in your bag and hit the road. It might cramp your social schedule — no eating lunch with your friends/coworkers — but at least your meals will be planned out.
This convenience, however, comes at a cost. Here are some reasons to avoid SlimFast. If you’re trying to adopt a healthy ketogenic lifestyle, then it’s more important to focus on healthy keto-friendly foods. Not processed bars and shakes that can get you into ketosis.
#1: SlimFast Keto May Contain Hidden Carbs
SlimFast’s keto products claim to have low net carbs, thanks to their high fiber content. The problem is that a lot of the fiber in SlimFast’s keto products comes from soluble corn fiber and isomaltooligosaccharides (IMOs).
Both fiber sources are popular among cheaper, lower-quality products aimed at people who are watching their carb intake. They’re inexpensive ways to add both sweetness and thickness/body to products.
In theory, your body doesn’t break soluble corn fiber and IMOs down, which has led manufacturers to claim that eating them won’t affect your blood sugar. Companies often claim that soluble corn fiber and IMOs are good for diabetics, keto dieters, and so on.
However, shortly after these fiber sources became popular, diabetics who ate them began noticing spikes in their blood sugar levels. That led to more research and some interesting findings.
Recent metabolism studies found that you actually do digest soluble corn fiber and that it has a glycemic .For reference, pizza has a glycemic index of 30, and sweetened yogurt has a glycemic index of 33
IMOs, another main fiber source in SlimFast’s keto bars, have the same problem. Their glycemic index is even higher than soluble corn fibers, driving researchers to conclude that “IMO does not constitute a dietary fiber and instead should be explored as a slow-digesting carbohydrate.”
If you’re on a keto diet, every gram of carbohydrate matters and SlimFast’s keto products may be more carb-heavy in practice than they seem to be based on their nutritional labels.
#5: SlimFast’s Keto Plan Isn’t Very Much Food
The SlimFast keto diet has you eating about 1100 calories per day if you’re a woman, or 1600 calories a day if you’re a man.
That’s not very many calories, especially if you work out (the program suggests 30 minutes of cardio a day).
A sample SlimFast diet meal plan looks something like:
Breakfast: meal replacement shake (or SlimFast keto meal bar)
Snack: SlimFast Chocolate Mint Fat Bomb
Lunch: keto meal replacement shake (or SlimFast keto meal bar)
Snack: SlimFast Salted Caramel Creme Fat Bomb Shot
Dinner: A “sensible 500-calorie meal”
Dessert snack: SlimFast Orange Creme Fat Bomb Shot
#6: SlimFast’s Plan Is Socially Restrictive
If you’re on a keto or paleo diet, you can probably find something to order at most restaurants. That’s important for long-term adherence — you can still eat meals with your friends, business partners, etc., as long as you pick carefully or modify your order a bit (skipping the bun on a burger, for example).
SlimFast’s plan gives you one 500-calorie meal a day. Other than that, you’re on shakes, bars, individually wrapped keto sweets, and liquid “snack” shots.
Eating mostly shakes and snacks has a variety of problems. For one, it’s not appetizing. You’re inevitably going to crave real food after a week or two, which will make it hard to stick to your plan and keep losing weight.
You also aren’t going to be able to eat out if you’ve already had your one 500-calorie meal for the day.
This kind of structure makes it unnecessarily difficult for you to stick with SlimFast’s keto meal plan. Snack bars and shakes should be for times when you don’t have access to real food. They shouldn’t make up the bulk of your diet.
Should You Try SlimFast’s Keto Diet?
The SlimFast keto plan works in theory, but in practice, there are better ways to do keto, and better ways to slim down.
If you want to lose weight with healthy, sustainable ketogenic nutrition, then you’ll have to eat more than just SlimFast keto meal replacement bars and shake mix.
Instead, just eat real food and healthy fats from foods like MCT oil, grass-fed butter, nuts, and seeds, avocados, and more. Fats and high-quality protein, along with plenty of low-carb vegetables taste better and will leave you feeling full and satisfied.
You’ll still lose weight and you’ll be much happier.
And if you really want weight loss shakes, then grab some high-quality whey protein, some MCT oil or coconut oil, peanut butter or nut butter and make your own meal replacement shake mix.
